Wisconsin

Follow along as our 4th grade students comment about their study of Wisconsin. They have visited the State Capital in Madison and blogged about the highlights of their trip.

  10. Margot I learned that Wisconsin started with sawmills. I also learned elephant like animals are called mastordons. Jean Nicolet was a european explorer.

    I have learned some state symbols for Wisconsin. For example the wood violet is our state flower. The badger is our state animal and milk is our state beverage.

    There were over 14,000 efigee mounds in Wisconsin, but now only 4,000 are left.Efigee mounds are usually in shapes of animals,people and birds.Jean Nicolet was the first Europeon to enter Wisconsin.

    1 thing that I learned about wisconsin i that the first three tribes that settled Wisconsin were the Sioux, Menominee, and Winnebago. I think it's interesting that they built effigy mounds.

    Wisconsin is called the badger state because lead miners would dig holes when mining for lead and they would basicly live in those holes.The badger is also Wisconsin's state animal. I love to learn about WISCONSIN!

    I learned that in the history of Wisconsin, there was a war called, the French and Indian War. It is called the French and Indian War because the american Indians fought along side the French against the British.

    The Iroquois indians were feared during the fur trade.They were fierce fighters.They fought for French goods.The French traded for mostly beaver fur.

    Wisconsin was made of many Native Americans including the Mennominee, Ho Chunk, Souix, Winnobago, Dakota, And much more smaller tribes. The state animal is a badger,the state wild animal is a White Tailed deer.

    We went to the Museum and saw the world's biggest knife. Also, the dome in the capitol's rotunda is the third largest in the world!

    Yesterday we went to MADISON!!!! We sat in the governer's meetting room. Plus we saw the oldest toast in Wisconsin. 150 years old!!!:)

    I thought the State Capitol was amazing.
    WE got to go in the Governor's office,hearing room,supreeme court,assembly,and senate.

    Their ceilings where made of glass.

    I wish I could do it over and over again it was so fun.
    That is what I thought about Madison!!!!!

    In the Assembly in the leguslative branch they use number names instead of letter names.For example the Representive that talked to us , her number name was 14.

    50 liberty bells were given by the French and 1 was given to each state.But the real Liberty bell is in Philadelphia.

    Madison was fun! We got to go inside the assembly room, the place where the governer works, and a place where they got the stone from the mediteranian sea. We learned that the dome in the capital was the largest in the U.S. and the 3rd largest in the world. I counted 62 badgerrs in the capital.

    Wisconsin is such a unique state.The capital was so ornate with the paintings, sculptures, and the the rooms.i learned so much and we had an assembly represenitive for district 14 talk to us. There was lots of historical things at the mueseam too. I got arroeheads and Milwaukee Braves cards too.

    I likd all the rooms with beautiful designs. I thought the Assembly was very cool, and how they communicate. I saw a cup that President Roosevelt drank out of and then got shot. I saw Lois and Clark's journil. I also saw the quilt that President Lincoln possably died in. Everything that looks like gold was actually Gold Leaf, including the ellavators which were pure gold. It was so cool that there were actually 2 fires in the capital, and the second one was on the coldest day in Wisconsin, so all the water that they used froze.

    62 BADGERS!!!!Wisconsin's state capitals dome is the 3th biggest in the world,and the biggest in the United States.I realy liked

    Madison was so much fun! We got to sit in the Assembly room, and learn all about their formal speaking, and how they have number names instead of letters. We also saw Old Abe. It felt so cool to see the very eagle that the 8th regiment took to war. There was gold in practicaly every room. Our tour guide told us that anything that looked like gold probably was gold. I loved Madison!
